Formally known as the New Hebrides, Vanuatu
gained independence in 1980 from joint
rulers England and France.
The influence from both countries remains
and is probably most noticeable in the
variety of cuisine.
Made up of about 80 islands in a Y shaped
archipelago spreading over some 900km, the
capital Port Vila on the island of Efate has
sound communications, banking facilities and
a range of accommodation options to suit
most budgets.
Currency: Local currency is the vatu, you
will find most businesses will accept major
currencies with plenty of money exchanges
should you require them.
